Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced new guidelines for the mobile number portability (MNP) India. The new rules are applicable from today onwards.

Under the new rules, the mobile number porting process will be completed within 3 to 5 days. Previously, the process used to take 15 days to port a mobile number from one operator to another. TRAI has also revealed that users need to pay Rs 6.46 for each porting request.

New Guidelines

The regulator has revealed some guidelines for MNP. To start with, users will have to use the active connection for at least 90 days. Postpaid users will have to clear all the outstanding dues as per their billing cycle.

Furthermore, users will not be eligible for portability if they have already made a request to change the ownership of the mobile number. "There should not be any pending contractual obligations to be fulfilled by the subscriber as per the exit clause provided in the subscriber agreement," TRAI said in a statement.

How to port a number?
The process is fairly simple. Users who are looking to port their mobile number can send an SMS with ‘PORT’ followed by a space and the ten-digit mobile number to 1900. Users will then get a Unique Porting Code (UPC) through an SMS, which is valid for four days. Users then need to go to the nearest customer service centre of the operator they want to port and fill the Customer Acquisition Form (CAF) and Porting Form and provide the UPC code.

Users have to make the necessary payment for porting along with requisite KYC documents. Once the documents and forms are submitted, users will get a new SIM, which will be activated within three days. However, in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and North-East areas, it will take 15 working days.

The process is the same for postpaid customers. Users can also withdraw the porting request by sending a CANCEL followed by space and the mobile number to 1900. However, it is important to note that withdrawing the porting request should be made within 24 hours of submitting the request.

Amidst a possible merger with Airtel Digital TV, Dish TV is now offering extra service of 30 days to users who recharge with the same channel pack for 12 months straight. Meaning, if a Dish TV user chooses the same channel pack consecutively for 12 months, without making any changes, the DTH operator will offer the package for one extra month for free. This would get the total to 13 months of service for the price of 12.

D2H, which is owned by Dish TV is also offering a similar long-term recharge offer for its customers. All DTH operators removed their actual long-term channel packs after TRAI’s new tariff system. The new regime made Cable and DTH operators gradually get rid of the long-term packs. The brands decided to offer lucrative long-term recharge offers to reel in customers for longer stints. Hence, Dish TV is providing customers with a month of free service along with a set-top box swap service for free.

Other Dish TV long-term recharge offers
Besides the 12 months offer, customers who recharge for 3 months in a row with the same channel packs, will get 7 days of free service. Similarly, users who recharge without modifying their packs for 6 months will get 15 days of free service.

What’s the free set-top box swap offer?

In such cases, getting the set-top box replaced is the only option left to customers. This usually costs quite a bit. Hence, for Dish TV customers who have recharged for 12 months in a row with the same pack, a free set-top box swap is also offered.

Tata Sky and Airtel Digital TV offer similar deals
Tata Sky is also offering a similar offer to customers. Those who do a yearly recharge one full month subscription for free. Meanwhile, Airtel Digital TV offer will you the 12th month free on recharging the same channel pack for 11 months.

The channels are also available across all leading DTH operators viz. Airtel Digital TV, Tata Sky, Dish TV, d2h, and Sun Direct,” ZEEL said in a statement.

“There has been no change in the consumer price (MRP) of the individual channels or channel packs whatsoever. Zee Prime Tamil SD pack, competitively priced at Rs. 10 only, is the best value pack in Tamil Nadu market when compared to other similar bouquets available in the same market.”

It further stated, “ZEEL has issued all the required communications to its esteemed viewers informing and urging them to approach their respective cable operators with a request to reactivate the channels, for which they have already paid Rs. 10, as part of their monthly subscription.

“This communication is purely issued in the interest of all our viewers since ZEEL has received several complaints and requests through emails and social media platforms, wherein the consumers have mentioned that their cable operators have removed the ZEE Bouquet from their channel packs, without any communication or reason. Hence, the viewers have expressed their disappointment for not being able to view their favourite ZEE Channels, despite having paid for the same.”

MUMBAI: Discovery Channel will unravel the potential dangers of uncontrolled environmental degradation and climate change with ‘India 2050’, a thought-provoking documentary, that premieres on 29th December at 9 pm.

The documentary begins with Jaipur, known as the Pink City of India, but imagined as in 2050, completely buried under piles of sand. It then moves into the future of currently flourishing metropolises of Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata, giving viewers a terrifying glimpse of what is to come, for each of these metro cities.

Highlighting the importance of the show, Discovery Director–Content, Factual & Lifestyle Entertainment – South Asia Sai Abishek said, “India 2050 shines a light on what could lie-ahead if we don’t change. It is a wake-up call, urging each one of us to emerge from our collective slumber to act before it gets too late.”

Highlighting industrial damage to the ecosystem in the show, Amitav Ghosh, author of Great Derangement, says, “We cannot in any way absolve companies and corporations of playing a role in this because we know now that there’s been a huge systematic, well-funded climate denial machine! It was really the role of money, which has actually held up any kind of climate action for a very long time now.” While, Environmentalist and Climate Change Expert Chandra Bhushan, warns, “We are going to leave our children a planet which is going to be much harsher than what we have today.”

While presenting this alarmist view on the future, the film also highlights a larger crisis that humanity is likely to face – the crisis of environmental migration and climate refugees, the effects of which we are already facing in 2019 in certain patches in the Sundarbans and on India’s east coast. Going forward, experts predict this to be the single most urgent crisis to be faced by every country in the world as sea levels will continue to rise and glaciers will continue to melt bringing about unprecedented and irrevocable changes to human life as we know it.

“We don’t have time anymore. In the month of August 2019, within 12 days, India received more than a thousand extreme and heavy rainfall events! You’re getting to see the worst impacts of climate change and they’re happening now!” says, Sunita Narain, Director General, Centre for Science and Environment, highlighting the need for immediate action.

“People like us are protected. We believe… and it’s our arrogance that has created the problem. Because we believe nothing can affect us! We will ramp up, we’ll put on another air conditioner – the heat outside goes on. If there is no water, we’ll buy bottled water. But we’re not worried about a dying river – because we still get clean water in our taps,” she further adds highlighting human apathy as one of the key reasons as to why we haven’t been able to come together as a species to counter climate change in any way.
