Google and Levi's make smart Commuter Trucker Jacket

Google and denim jeans company Levi’s have developed a new jacket that lets users interact with their smartphones by swiping at the garment in various ways, a media report said.

Called the ‘Commuter Trucker Jacket’, the garment is aimed at cyclists who may be too busy riding and concentrating on their surroundings to reach into their pockets and fiddle with their phones, Forbes reported on Friday citing Paul Dillinger, company head of global product innovation.

The jacket is apparently waterproof – except for a detachable electronic smart tag that activates a wireless connection between the clothing and a mobile device. “If you get this thing dirty, you put it in the washing machine,” said Dillinger during Google’s annual developer conference in Mountain View, California, this week.

The garment is powered by Google’s Project Jacquard technology developed by the internet giant’s Advanced Technology and Projects Group.

Google plans to start selling Project Ara modular phones in 2017

Google plans to start selling its mobile phones with modular, replaceable parts – the first phone ever that the tech giant is manufacturing – by next year, according to a media report. The Project Ara team, involved in developing the product, confirmed that the modular phones would be available to consumers next year, technology website The Verge reported on Friday.

The Google modular phones will work on a simple concept – once a basic model is bought all the bits can be pulled off and swapped as the consumer sees fit. For instance, if a user fancies a more powerful camera module he can buy one through Google’s dedicated store and replace the existing one with it.

The same can be done with other components as well including memory, battery, display panels, keyboards, sensors and scanners. “It’s a system that will allow more space for modules,” The Verge reported after taking a look at the prototype of the modular mobile at Google headquarters in California.

“They let me try saying ‘Okay Google, eject the camera module’ and it straight-up worked: a tiny latch inside the phone body moved when I set the phone on the table (face down) and the module released,” the report said quoting the website’s executive editor Dieter Bohn. “There’s still work to do here – Google needs to ship, it needs to get module partners on board, it needs to make the whole thing a little thinner and nicer looking,” he added.

Google might remove Chrome's backspace navigation shortcut

$

If you've ever been filling out a form online and your slippery fingers accidentally hit the backspace key, you know the quiet rage that comes when Chrome takes that backspace key to mean you want to go back a page, and you lose all your information. That may not be the case for very much longer. Google is testing a version of Chrome that removes the backspace navigation shortcut, Engadget reports .

Turn back

The news comes from a Chromium Code Reviews page , which claims .04 percent of page views in Chrome come from a backspace navigation, and .005 percent of those views come after a form interaction. Because of this, those .005 percent of views are likely unintentional. Command-Left or Alt-Left will also bring users back a page in Chrome, but it really takes two hands to do, which means even the clumsiest of typers is unlikely to do it accidentally.

Some users have suggested Google just warn the user with a pop-up if they are about to lose form information via a backspace shortcut. If that doesn't work, there's always the Chrome BackStop extension.

Google built its own custom chip for its AI Bots

Google has designed its very own custom chip for deep neural networks, the technology behind its artificial intelligence based internet services.

At Google I/O, CEO Sundar Pichai spoke about company’s self-designed ASIC or application-specific integrated circuit to drive deep neural networks. Google is using AI to identify objects and faces inside photos and same AI processes ‘Google Now’ voice queries.

Google is in fact using the same technology to deliver smart home speaker with Google Assistant built-in. Google calls the chip as Tensor processing unit, based on company’s TensorFlow software engine.

Google, like Microsoft and Facebook , is betting heavily on AI for its future. At I/O 2016, Google employees spoke in lengths about company’s AI technology and machine learning.

“We’ve been running TPUs inside our data centers for more than a year, and have found them to deliver an order of magnitude better-optimized performance per watt for machine learning,” Google said in a blog post.

Google developing its very own chip could mean trouble for traditional chipmakers like Intel who are underpinning hopes on AI as their next growth segment.

India to get new indigenously-built supercomputer next year

$

India will get an indigenously- built supercomputer next year as part of the government’s Rs 4,500-crore programme aimed at taking India into an elite league of nations who have made advancements in the field.

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing that built India’s first supercomputer, Param, is handling the project, said Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary in the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The government had in March last year approved the plan of the National Supercomputing Mission, under which 80 supercomputers will be built in the next seven years.

“Some of them will be imported and the rest will be built be indigenously. The first one will come up by August 2017,” he said.

“We are working on how to control heat. The cost of power to run these supercomputers alone will be around Rs 1,000 crore,” Sharma said.

The new supercomputers will be kept in different institutes across the country. “A supercomputer can be used for various purposes like climate modeling, weather forecast, discoveries of drugs among others,” Sharma said.

Currently, countries like the US Japan, China and the European Union account for a major share of the top supercomputing machines in the world.

Samsung sold more premium smartphones in India than Apple in FY’16

$
0
0
Amid all the hoopla about Tim Cook‘s visit to India, a Counterpoint Research report paints a fairly bleak picture about Apple in India. The report claims that in FY’2015-16, Samsung sold more premium smartphones than its arch rival. Premium smartphones are defined as smartphones priced over Rs 30,000. With Apple mainly focused on that price segment, this wouldn’t come as the best of news.

According to the research report, by the end of 2015-16, Samsung’s market share in the premium segment stood at 47 percent, while Apple trailed with a share of 45 percent. This is a reverse in trend from the year before, where Apple led with a market share of 43 percent, while Samsung trailed with a share of 35 percent.

Numbers shared by retail market tracker Gfk also paints a similar picture, ToI reports. As of March this year, Samsung led with a volume share of 56 percent and value share of 55.7 percent. Apple, on the other hand, has a volume share of 37.9 percent and value share of 39.5 percent.

Analyzing the trend, the report states that Samsung’s ‘edge’ series of devices have made their mark in India and a steady drop in prices have only helped their cause. The Galaxy Note 5 too has done relatively well.

This year too Samsung looks to have had a good start with its Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge flagship smartphones, which are not only very good devices, but are priced competitively as well. Apple, on the other hand, seems to have missed the boat with the iPhone SE, which has been marred by a very high price tag. Analysts expect an upturn in Apple’s fortunes only after the iPhone 7 is launched in India.

It’s not just the premium segment, and Samsung is literally dominating the mobile space in India. The South Korean giant has a market share of 26.6 percent in the Indian smartphone space, while Apple is way behind with a share of around two percent.

It is this stat that Apple is focused on changing, which was also one of the reasons for Cook’s visit to India. Apple sees India as its primary growth driver in the next decade, and is making changes to its strategy for the country. Besides the devices itself, Apple has announced a technology development center in Hyderabad with a focus on maps, and an iOS app design and development accelerator , which will come up in Bengaluru next year.

India's Got Talent rules weekend 9pm slot; Kapil Sharma Show lags behind

$

0
Last week we reported that the first episode of ‘India’s Got Talent’ (IGT) brought up the ratings of the 9pm slot to 7 million impressions in week 18 (30 April-6 May, 2016) which was 5 million impressions in the previous 13 weeks. Interestingly in the week 19 (7-13 May, 2016) the reality talent-hunt show generated average viewership of 8.5 million across India, followed by ‘Comedy Nights Bachao’ which garnered 6 million impressions according to BARC data.
The most touted and hyped up ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ (TKSS) continues to disappoint viewers in living up to their expectation in Week 19, garnering only 5.5 million impressions, lesser than the two comedy shows (‘Comedy Nights Bachao’ and ‘Comedy Nights Live’) on Colors thereby relegating it to No 3 in the comedy space and No 4 in the non-fiction space, according to data sourced from BARC subscribers.
Zee's ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ is at no 5. In fact, ‘India’s Got Talent’ viewership is 58% higher than ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ which started off with nearly 9 million impressions in the first week. While &TV’s latest reality dance show starring Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit, ‘So You Think You Can Dance India’ attracted 1 million impressions in Week 19.

At HSM Urban too, ‘India’s Got Talent’ generated average viewership of 6.0million, while ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ got a viewership of 4.2million.
For the first two episodes, average of 36million viewers sampled ‘India’s Got Talent’ while for ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ got eyeballs from 32million viewers. The story remains same across strata, be URBAN HSM or RURAL HSM (Urban HSM: 22million vs 21million, Rural HSM: 12million Vs 9million). This clearly indicates the universal appeal of IGT across urban and rural market.

Amazon will no longer refund tablets, laptops, PCs, cameras, camera lense & furniture

$

Amazon has updated its returns policy to exclude items like tablets, laptops, PCs, cameras, accessories and a few other items from refunds. If a user receives one of the aforementioned products in a damaged or defective state, the user will only be eligible for a free replacement rather than a full refund. These limitations only apply to Amazon fulfilled products and other sellers are free to deal with the situation as they see fit.

Amazon’s returns page says the following now, “Mobile phones, Tablets, Laptops, Desktops, Monitors, Cameras and Camera lenses that are fulfilled by Amazon are not eligible for refund and have a replacement only policy. In case you have received a defective or a damaged mobile phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, monitor, camera or camera lens that is fulfilled by Amazon, you will be eligible for a free replacement by the seller as per the product replacement policies provided on Amazon.in.” Any issues with these products will need to be brought up within 10 days of delivery to be eligible for a replacement product.

It was only recently that Amazon updated its returns policy to say that damaged and/or defective mobile phones would only be replaced rather than refunded.

No official reason has been given for putting the policy in place, but unnamed sources inside Amazon tell us that the policy is there to protect sellers from shoppers who are taking advantage of Amazon’s no-questions asked returns policy. Also, Amazon isn’t the only one with a policy of this type as Flipkart has also implemented a similar returns policy for some time now.
