Idea reveals Rs 595 plan; the new long-validity offer comes with 10GB data and unlimited voice

Idea has just launched a new long-term validity plan priced at Rs 595. This new plan is aimed at its prepaid users offering unlimited voice calls along with 100 SMS per day for 112 days. Unlike other plans that Idea offers along with its competition, this plan does not focus on the amount of data that it provides its users and just focuses on people who want to make voice calls or communicate with the help of SMS. The company has also added 10GB data along with the plan which may seem good on its own, but when compared with other plans by its competition, 10GB data for more than three months does not mean much.

Prepaid users “across all the major circles” can opt for this plan as reported by Telecomtalk.info. However, one thing to note here is that even though the company is claiming unlimited calls on paper, the voice calls are limited to 250 minutes outgoing calls per day and 1000 minutes outgoing calls per week. If the users end up crossing the 250 minutes or 1000 minutes market then they will be charged 60 paise per minute. Though the calls are not limited to any particular network.

The limitations don’t end there as users will be charged 60 paise per minute if they make calls to more than 100 unique numbers on the last seven days. The point to note here is that this one paisa per second charge will continue “for the rest of validity of recharge”. This means that one has to be careful to not cross this limit.

The offer also gives “free-roaming benefit” to the users opting for the plan but that is limited to Idea Cellular network as pointed in the report. Talking about the limited data offering, if and when the users cross the limit, they will be charged with 4 paise per 10kb making it a costly proposition and this means Rs 4 per MB.

WhatsApp limits message forwarding to tackle misinformation

In an effort to curb misinformation and fake news, WhatsApp has announced that it’s making modifications to message forwarding within its chatting app. Weeks after introducing the ‘forwarded label’ on messages, WhatsApp will be imposing restrictions on how many groups or chats a message can be forwarded to.

According to its official blog post, WhatsApp is testing a limit forwarding feature which will restrict the number of people or groups you can send a forwarded message to, simultaneously. While the limit is kept at 20 for users worldwide, the same has been reduced to just 5 in India following over a dozen lynchings which occurred due to viral message circulations in the country.

The latest changes have come into action to help reduce the amount of information that goes viral on the largest text messaging app in which WhatsApp notes that Indians forward “more messages, photos, and videos than any other country in the world”.

Additionally, WhatsApp is also removing the quick forward button from its app, the icon adjacent to the media tagging icon. This will force users to either long press on a message and copy-paste it like the order days or download the media and send the content to another person manually, thus removing the convenience of forwarding a message.

Another report by Economic Times states that WhatsApp will also be working closely with the Election Commission of India to verify fraudulent messages during the 2019 General Elections in India. The model which was earlier used during the elections in Mexico is what WhatsApp calls Verificado and will employ a team of researchers, public policy makers, customer operations to check whether a news or message circulated ring the polls with be authentic or not.

Prior to the introduction of these features, India’s information technology ministry has said in an aggressive statement that WhatsApp could face legal action if it doesn’t take proper initiatives to tackle the spread of misinformation and fake news. According to the FirstPost, the ministry said: “rumours and fake news get propagated by mischief-mongers, the medium used for such propagation cannot evade responsibility and accountability”. The statement added that if WhatsApp remains spectators to the latest issues, they’ll be treated as aiders and will be sued under legal rights.

While WhatsApp’s new set of changes is a start to minimise the effect of viral circulation of misinformation, there’s still a long way to go for the popular messaging service to resume regular functions after it was involved in a series of lynchings which originated from false rumours sent from within the app.

Amid competition from Jio and Vodafone, Airtel launches Rs 299 plan with no data

$

Telecom companies in India are these days battling to offer as many benefits as possible (especially data) for the least amount of money. Amid this heavy competition, Bharti Airtel has quietly launched a plan that offers quite a few things, but no data at all.

Airtel’s new Rs 299 plan offers unlimited voice calling, and a validity of 45 days. Users also get 100 SMS per day, but as mentioned, no data, TelecomTalk reports. It is currently unclear, if the free SMS in this plan are valid while on roaming.

These days when all the buzz is around how much data a particular plan offers, Airtel’s move comes as a bit of a surprise. Having said that, it does come across as a great plan for people who are constantly on the move and their work entails a lot of calling. From that perspective, this Rs 299 plan comes across as a good option for a secondary device.

At this price range, Airtel also offers Rs 249 and Rs 349 combo plans that offer unlimited voice calling and oodles of data. But these plans come with a validity of only 28 days. There is also a Rs 199 plan that offers unlimited voice calling without FUP, 1.4GB of data per day, and 100 SMS per day. Again this plan is only valid for 28 days.

In essence, Airtel’s plans don’t have any cap on the voice calls, which has been one of the effects of Reliance Jio. In comparison, the likes of Vodafone and Idea Cellular have caps on their plans. These telcos are limiting voice calls to 250 minutes per day, and 1,000 minutes per week. During the validity period, these telcos also only allow calling to 300 unique numbers.

MUMBAI: One of the love sagas by Ekta Kapoor, Kasauti Zindagi Kay is all set to hit the small screen after 17 years. The third longest running show from the K-series is back again on Star Plus. Produced by Balaji telefilms, the show successfully ran for seven years with Shweta Tiwari as Prerna, Cezanne Khan as Anurag Basu and Ronit Roy as Mr Bajaj.

Recently, the first promo of Kasauti Zindagi Kay was released. The promo features Erica Fernandes as Prerna in the show, while the male lead will be played by Parth Samthaan.

On this, Ekta Kapoor used social media to convey that “Love never dies!!! When you think it’s over, it returns! Here it is Kasauti Zindagi Kay!”

Kasauti was one of the most successful shows, not just for Balaji Telefilms but also Star Plus. The channel, which is currently facing a hard time owing to low ratings, has been brainstorming on ideas to get its audience back. It may be difficult to imagine new faces in these roles. But as hinted by Ekta in the post, the rebooted version will also be an emotional drive and audience will love this season as well.
